With the deep water exploration, Floating Production Storage Offloading (FPSO) is invented 30 years ago. With high cost in transportation of gas (for LNG production), Floating LNG extraction unit is invented and now...FIRST Floating Gas Refinery

World's First Advance Floating Gas Refinery
The World's First Advance Floating Gas Refinery took 7 years from concept stage to engineering completion and further 2 years for construction. This giant refinery weighs 35,000 T and 100,000 T with the carrying vessel (Blue Marlin of Dockwise BV). Refinery was constructed in Spain and presently operating for one of the gas fields in Artic Circle.

It processes the non associated gas collected through Sub Sea piping network and transports the processed gas through a Sub Sea pipeline to the onshore facility. It seems there are 5 gas turbines to run this whole refinery.

Industry won’t expand refineries since demand for gas will remain the same.
A push from Congress and the White House for huge increases in biofuels, such as ethanol, is prompting the oil industry to scale back its plans for refinery expansions. That could keep gasoline prices high, possibly for years to come.
With President Bush calling for a 20 percent drop in gasoline use and the Senate now debating legislation for huge increases in ethanol production, oil companies see growing uncertainty about future gasoline demand and little need to expand refineries or build new ones.

Valero Energy Corp. is taking another step toward expanding its Norco refinery by seeking approval of $1 billion in Gulf Opportunity Zone bonds from the St. Charles Parish Council.
Company officials stressed that they have not committed to the project to expand the refinery's capacity from 220,000 barrels of crude per day to 380,000 barrels, but the company is lining up permits and financing before making the decision.
"The permitting process is kind of lengthy, so it's best to get the permits in place before taking it to the board for approval," Valero spokesman Bill Day said Friday.

Little-known, privately held Hyperion Resources Inc. said on Wednesday it plans to build an $8 billion oil refinery, the first in the United States since 1976, at one of several sites under consideration in the U.S. Midwest.
Dallas-based Hyperion plans a 400,000 barrels per day (bpd) refinery as part of “the most environmentally sound energy center in the United States” that will include a power plant fueled by petroleum coke, a refining byproduct.

Third Refinery Project Approved in Vietnam

The Vietnamese government has approved the construction of the country’s third oil refinery, the Government Office announced Wednesday.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has given permission for the refinery, with the first choice of location to be in Long Son commune of Ba Ria-Vung Tau, built either solely or jointly by foreign investors, or by local entrepreneurs.
Investors also have the option of setting it up in other locations – like Vung Ro in Phu Yen province or Doc Ham in Ninh Thuan province...
